ISO 42001 Without the Theater: What Teams Can Borrow Now

ISO 42001 is a formal standard for AI management systems. Not every team is ready for certification work, but many teams can still borrow useful operating habits from the standard.

011. Assign Real Ownership

An AI system should have an accountable owner. That person or function should know the purpose, data sources, user groups, risk level, launch status, and review cycle.

Ownership prevents AI features from becoming orphaned experiments that nobody monitors after launch.

AI management begins with ownership, documentation, and review discipline.

022. Document the Intended Use

Write down what the system is for, who uses it, what decisions it supports, what data it uses, and what it should not be used for.

This is not paperwork for its own sake. Intended use helps product, engineering, and governance teams agree on boundaries.

033. Manage Change

AI systems change when models, prompts, retrieval sources, tools, or policies change. Teams should record significant changes and retest the workflows they affect.

Change control does not need to be slow. It needs to be visible.

044. Improve Continuously

The most practical governance habit is review. Look at incidents, user feedback, eval results, latency, refusals, and unexpected tool calls on a schedule.

The point is not to make AI delivery heavy. It is to make responsible delivery repeatable.
